Travel – 02 // Bucket List – Flying to Faro and the Algarve…

Dan and I have been together now for 13 years.  It has flown by.  I suppose that old saying ‘time flies when you are having fun’ is true.  Nearly 13 years ago we had our first holiday together, a last minute flight to Portugal.  We rented a little apartment on the outskirts of Albufeira, which was small and sparsely decorated, but what it lacked in home decor was made up by the fact that the beach was a 2 minutes walk away.

Blissed out on those early days of young love, we spent our time exploring fishing villages, walking on vast expanses of beach and drinking Sangria.  It was wonderful.  Carefree days that stretched gloriously before us, we slept in late and danced away the night.

Our travel to the Algarve was very easy, we booked our ticket and flew direct from Bristol to Faro, which only took a couple of hours.  Once at Faro airport we hired a little car so we could travel to our apartment and explore the coastline.

One of my favourite day trips was to visit the mountain region and the pretty village of Monchique.   White cottages and cobble streets.  Pink potted geraniums and palm trees.  The view from the top was incredible, all of the Algarve below and the sea glistening in the distance.  We spent a few hours wandering around, eating in the cafe and shopping for local pottery in the many tourist shops.

I still have the pretty bowl I bought there in my kitchen. Each time I use it, it reminds me of that lovely time in Portugal.  I’d love to return one day, taking the boys.  But I am sure it will be a much busier holiday than the one Dan and I remember!

Have you been to Portugal?  Where did you visit?  I’d love to know where is good to take the kids, or is it just the beach?
