After one final Summer fling last weekend, today signifies the beginning of Autumn.   I love Autumn, (what’s not to love! surely all the best people do!).  It’s mellow musty smell, the abundance of harvests, orange pumpkins, kids scurrying for fallen conkers. The colour of the hedgerows, slowly, slowly turning through all the shades of rust until they fall in a heap. Lying there waiting to be kicked and thrown by laughing kids.

Autumn, a chance to build big bonfires, to celebrate the darker nights.  Toast marshmallows, sing songs and light candles.  Our wood burning stove will have a good clean out this month, in preparation for Winter.  I cannot wait to have it lit, it fills me with such excitement.  As does gathering of wood.  Loading bags of freshly chopped wood into the car.

In these colder days, we spend a lot of time out, I prefer Autumn to wander the woods, smelling the richness of damp leaves. Spotting mushrooms, picking cob nuts.  On those days we wear big woolly knits, fingerless gloves and warm hats.  Taking a basket of warming goodies to have a woodland picnic.  A flask of hot chocolate.  Popcorn. Squares of good chocolate and homemade flapjacks.  mmmm

In the home I also think, like in Spring, Autumn is great time to clear the decks. De-clutter the rooms, giving the house a good clean.  Bring out your warm blankets and jumpers, give them a refresh.  Change cushions to rich velvets and wool.  I particularly love these from H&M.  Layer your sofa in them and add a sheepskin rug or two.

Stock up on candles.  I love the natural beeswax kind like these from Toast or for a scented version why not try these from Hobo Soy Candles.

On your walks look out for large fir cones, pretty seed heads or tactile conkers, bring nature in to your home and join in with my monthly series #natureinthehome.  This month you can win a pretty vintage floral bed set or a pair of cosy cashmere socks, from Soak & Sleep.  Just head over to instagram to upload your image before the end of the month.

Yes Autumn – hi there. Welcome once again.
