Oh yesterday, you were utterly glorious. Usually the changing of the clocks leaves me feeling helpless, lost and very scared of Winter. I hate the dark nights, and the bitterly cold, as I tend to suffer with seasonal affective disorder. This year, I hope, that I won’t be as affected by it… please!
Yesterday, didn’t feel like that. Perhaps it’s because my sons are older, and they no longer bounce out of bed at 5am. It actually felt good getting up an hour earlier and make full use of the day. It was also enhanced by glorious sunshine.
Determined to make the most of it, we planned a little walk up on the Mendip hills in Somerset, to cook our lunch among the bracken. Food was carefully chosen by Charlie, all food groups were considered. Meat (horrible boiled German hotdogs), brioche buns and tomato soup. Yeah! All the best food if you are a 9 year old boy!
So Dan packed up our small camping stove, our mix-matched enamel kit and we set off for walk. Jumping through the bracken like happy golden retrievers, searching for the ‘ultimate’ picnic spot. Rufus had one requirement next to a tree to climb and views across the levels to the Severn Estuary and Wales beyond.
Dan set up camp, while I faffed taking many photos of bracken and boys up the tree. Soon we were eating our delicious (yuk!) lunch. Boys happy, Rufus up a tree and Dan loving the ‘man cook on fire’ thing.
Once fed, we took a walk through the many small tracks on the moors, stopping to discover berries and crab apples on trees. Making dens in the bracken and jumping out at dogs bounding past. Finding armfuls of conkers and lost feathers to collect. Whooping and shouting as they went.
Yesterday filled me up with goodness. I must remember to make the most of the sunshine more, take my wild boys on endless romps through the countryside this half term. Move away from the computer and my phone (although I need that to take pictures!) and enjoy this time.
