Self love | 5 crystals for beginners…

January is my month of self care.  A down time to relax, eat healthily and nourish body, mind and spirit.  I’ve always been drawn to the spiritual side of self care, I suppose growing up close to Glastonbury rubs off on an impressionable young girl.  The power of crystals though is relatively new to me, although I have collected them throughout my life, I’ve not really considered how that can help with our moods and clarity.

There are several factors to consider in choosing your crystals, do you want a polished crystal or a rough cut crystal – both are good for different uses.  A smooth pebble like crystal is lovely to hold in your hand, perfect to slip into your pocket and carry around with you as a talisman.  A rough cut crystal is more architectural and looks great in your home… both stylish and spiritually functional.

Once you’ve decided what ‘style’ of crystal you are after, then there are many of crystals to choose from, for different qualities.  With so many to choose from what are best to purchase when you are just starting out:

5 crystals for beginners

Five crystals for the beginner

Rose Quartz: The Earth Mother

In my mind, the most prettiest of crystals with it’s millennium pink colour, and looks so pretty on my mantel.  It is also the ultimate comfort crystal. Rose Quartz is the Mother of all crystals. Gentle and soothing, it helps heal emotional pain. Opening the Heart Chakra it allows you to feel compassion for others and yourself. The is the self love stone.

Citrine: The Prosperity Magnet

The crystal is great for your January resolutions, with it’s ability to draw prosperity and abundance into your life. Citrine is also good for self confidence as it opens up the Solar Plexus Chakra. This crystal can also be used to detoxify negative energies from the aura and encourage a more positive state of mind.

Clear Quartz: The Master Healer

This crystal was one of the first crystals I owned.  I bought some large pieces whilst I was travelling in India.  Drawn to the raw yet pure quality, I travelled with these beautiful crystals, bringing them home with me.  Clear Quartz in an essential crystal healing tool and is probably the most versatile of crystals, they can direct energies and enhance the energy of other crystals. It is cleansing, helps bring clarity while also keeping your energy and aura bright and strong.

Amethyst: The Psychic Powerhouse

As a young girl my mum had a large rough cut crystal Amethyst.  Deep purple in colour, I loved how the light bounced off it.  I remember being fascinated with it, I suppose this is where my love of crystals started.  Super spiritual Amethyst connects you with your spiritual power. Deeply cleansing, this violet crystal purifies negative energies. You can also use Amethyst for protection and developing your natural psychic abilities.

Smoky Quartz: The Negativity Buster

Smoky quartz is beautiful.  This form of Quartz crystal can be brown to smoky black in colour to very pale grey. Smoky Quartz absorbs negative energies from around you or those created by our own negative thought patterns. Also another good crystal for grounding and protection.  Perfect for the January blues.

Please note that I am by no means an expert when it come to crystals, this knowledge is what I have gained from a little research.  There are plenty of resources out there, great books and of course crystal shops to ask what is best for your needs.  I am lucky to have the brilliant Two Palms here in Bristol, where I can purchase crystals and ask for advice.

  • Thank you for sharing Lou! I purchased my first few stones a couple of years ago and honestly feel rejuvenated. My hubby carries his every day in his pocket, and swears by their strength.
