mid-summer feasts…

“I know a bank where the wild thyme blows,
Where oxlips and the nodding violet grows,
Quite over-canopied with luscious woodbine,
With sweet musk-roses and with eglantine.”
― William ShakespeareA Midsummer Night’s Dream

Mid Summer is here… the longest day, where the sun reigns. We love to celebrate with a special feast.  Usually outside, cooked over a fire.  With candle light and cooling drinks to keep us company. If we are at home, I love to get out our best of everything, vintage table linen, old silver cutlery.  Decorate the table with flowers from the garden and shells to remind us of summer holidays and memories made in the years before…

But what to eat?  Food to celebrate…..

Elderflower Cordial or Champagne
Why not decorate your drinks with floral ice-cubes
Celebrate flowers, by adding them to your salad. Try nasturtiums, violas and borage.
Fresh garden produce, peas, beetroots, artichokes – seasonal is best.
Seafood, whole crab (if you can get it).  Grilled mackerel or salmon in parcels with fresh herbs and lemon.
Chicken scented with thyme.
Strawberries and raspberries piled high, drizzled in cream.
A strawberry and wildflower cake would be the highlight of the evening!
Ice cream – so many flavours. Sea salt  & lemon, strawberry and lavender…..
And don’t forget marshmallows to toast on your fire…
Enjoy your solstice….

  • Happy solstice! What a great idea, we had a friend over for an impromptu dinner last night and it turned into a lovely evening. We let the children stay up until after 10pm as they were enjoying themselves so much, although the youngest put himself to bed earlier on! Antonia x
