Last Saturday I was invited to the Happy Foodie cook book club, to celebrate the launch of Yotam Ottolenghi’s new book – Simple.
The Happy Foodie cook book club organised a ‘pot luck’ style of lunch lunch, with every guest bringing a dish from Ottenghi’s book, Simple. I made a buck wheat, tomato and aubergine dish with preserved lemon yogurt.
Cooking for Yotam and other serious foodies was daunting. I actually followed the recipe to the letter, not wanting to make something sub standard. Chopping onions finely and waiting for them to soften before adding the other ingredients. My usual home cooking style is to chuck everything, and make food from my head.
My dish turned out to be delicious, I needn’t had been so nervous! Saturday came and I travelled to London by train, carrying my precious food to Rye London in Dalston. Four trains later, I was there, prettying my buckwheat dish with chopped mint.
I loved watching them cooking. Two simple dishes, packed full of flavour. Chilli fish, white fish cooked in a chilli tomato sauce and a tahini dressing. And a vibrant courgette salad.
Finally, it was time to eat. We gathered around the beautifully decorated table and tried the dishes that everyone had bought. Each cooked from the book Simple, each cooked by a different person. Yet, each dish complimented each other.
I adored it. Sitting there eating and chatting to food lovers. Such a great way to spend an afternoon.
Thank you to The Happy Foodie for inviting me. I loved it.
